Common Questions About Therapy

At VIVA Therapy, we understand that starting therapy can feel like a big step. Below is some information that we think will answer some of the most common questions new clients have about therapy - but if there is anything we haven't answered, please get in touch as we would be happy to answer any questions you have.

What happens in a therapy session?

In a typical session, you’ll have the opportunity to talk about your thoughts, feelings, and experiences in a safe and supportive space. Your therapist will help you explore challenges, develop coping strategies, and work toward meaningful change. But don't worry, we will work at your pace and you don't have to talk about anything you don't feel comfortable talking about, until you're ready to.

How long is a session?

Individual therapy sessions typically last 50 minutes and couples therapy lasts for 60 minutes. We also offer Single Session Therapy (110 minutes) for those who want to focus on a specific issue in a one-off session.

How often should I attend therapy?

Most people attend therapy weekly, and this is best practice, at least in the beginning of therapy––but this can vary depending on your needs. Your therapist will discuss a schedule that works best for you.

How long will I need therapy?

Therapy is a highly individual process. Some clients benefit from short-term therapy (6-12 sessions), while others prefer longer-term support. You can have therapy for as long as you find it helpful and you can stop anytime.

Do you offer online therapy?

Yes! In fact this is the only way we work! We provide online therapy sessions, offering flexibility and accessibility so you can attend from wherever you feel most comfortable.  All the evidence suggests that online therapy is as good as in person therapy and, if you are not sure, we encourage you to try it for yourself.

What issues can therapy help with?

Our therapists support individuals with a wide range of challenges, including anxiety, low self-esteem, ADHD, stress, trauma, grief, and life transitions.

Do you offer therapy for ADHD?

Yes! We have therapists with personal and professional experience and training in ADHD who can help you with the impact of ADHD and develop strategies to manage overwhelm, improve self-esteem, and enhance daily functioning.

Is therapy confidential?

Yes, therapy is completely confidential. However, there are some legal exceptions, such as if there is a risk of harm to yourself or others. Your therapist will explain confidentiality in detail during your first session.

About Couples Therapy

How can couples therapy help?

Couples therapy can help partners improve communication, learn how to resolve conflicts, rebuild trust, and strengthen their relationship. It provides a safe space to explore challenges and develop healthier patterns of communication.

Do both partners have to attend every session?

Ideally, both partners attend together, but in some cases, individual sessions may be beneficial alongside joint sessions.

Can therapy help if we are considering separation?

Yes. Therapy can support couples in making thoughtful decisions about their relationship, whether that means working toward reconciliation or navigating separation in a healthy way.
